Squids, the first week!

That’s it, we have started the work on our first game project, code name Squids…
So many things to say: the design is exciting, the engine team is awesome and really strong in game play, and we have met with a few artists and they are sending us some research this week so we should have very soon the complete team…
We actually already have a very rough prototype. There is nothing in the prototype, just a character and the move controls, even though, I actually enjoy just playing with the character and moving it around. For me this means we have gold in our hands! And wait till you see the first character designs… Well we should be able to cover our websites with squids and reveal a little bit more pretty soon. Stay posted.

iPokerChips a virtual case of poker chips

So that’s it our first app is available on the AppStore. We are very happy because for us iPokerChips is not only a great app (very handy to play poker everywhere, nice features like players profile and stats, ease of use, …) but it was also our first project on iOS. It was a test project to build a small team with collaborators from around the world, design, develop and debug the best quality app on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch as efficiently as possible, localize it in 7 languages, submit it to Apple and – very important – try a few techniques to gain visibility on the App Store (I will write a longer post about that because it’s really interesting). We are pretty happy with the results so far and everything we learned. Check the website and get on the list to win an iPad: http://ipoker-chips.com/ or even better try it yourself on the AppStore  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ipokerchips-ipad/id393761263

And EA bought Chillingo
Interestingly EA bought the publisher Chillingo (Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, …) to « increase market leadership on the Apple(R) platform and strengthen its position as the world’s leading wireless entertainment publisher. The acquisition combines Chillingo’s expertise in cultivating the ideas of independent developers with EA’s global reach in mobile publishing. Chillingo is widely recognized for publishing highly original and successful games from the developer community. EA is committed to preserving Chillingo’s independence enabling them to manage and cultivate their great network of relationships to deliver the optimal gaming experience for consumers. »

Apple loosens restrictions on third-party development tools

Apple has quietly loosened restrictions on third-party development tools in its apps, declaring it’ll permit all tools « as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. »
Bottom line: Easier to make apps: good. Competition on tools: good. Even less barrier to entry in the App Store: may be not so good?
